5 Ways to Reduce the Impact of a Car Accident

Although car accidents come with no warning, that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare for them. Every time you get behind the wheel, there are tips and tricks you can follow to make sure you’re ready for the unavoidable.

Here are five ways to keep injuries to a minimum:

  1. Buckle Up
Using your seatbelt should never be optional. Properly securing yourself vastly decreases your chance of suffering severe injuries
  2. Maintain Your Vehicle
From airbags to brakes to other safety features, keeping your car in good shape can help keep you safe. Don’t skip out on regular maintenance.
  3. Get Help ASAP
The sooner first responders arrive at the scene of an accident, the better. Keep your phone handy and call for help, even if it might not seem like anyone is hurt.
  4. Steady braking
Wet and icy roads contribute to many accidents. Keeping control of your car and not slamming on the brakes can prevent going into a slide or spin.
  5. Brace for impact
Your position at impact makes a serious difference. If you know it’s coming, here’s what to do:
    1. Face straight ahead
    2. Sit back against the headrest
    3. Tighten your muscles and hold onto the steering wheel
    4. Keep your wrists flat and straight out

Federal officials: High tech can reduce car accidents

The Joplin Globe reports that federal transportation officials are pushing automakers to incorporate new communications technology in vehicles. The tech won’t allow drivers to talk to friends or get directions or receive texts, however. Instead, it will enable new passenger vehicles to talk to each other. Officials say if the technology were to be employed in all vehicles, we would see a significant drop in car accidents, injuries and fatalities.
